- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to compare the immediate effect of a lift technique and a balanced ligamentous tension (BLT) technique to the cervico- thoracic (CT) junction on cervical range of motion (CROM) and grip strength of the palmar interossei muscles. The results were compared with a control group which did not receive any manipulation. The secondary aim was to ascertain by how much the outcomes of the techniques differ. Methodology: The experiment required 60 participants, which were randomly and equally allocated to 3 groups; CT lift, BLT or control. Participants of the experimental groups received accordingly a CT lift or a BLT-technique on the spinal segment of C7/T I . Subjects of the control group were asked to lie supine on a couch for 5 minutes. A CROM device was used to assess rotation of the cervical spine before and after each investigation. The strength of the palmar interossei muscles was measured before and after each investigation by using a dynamometer. Results: Data analysis using t-tests showed a statistical significant increase of total rotation of the cervical spine (p<0.001) after application of the CT lift. BLT group and control group showed no significant difference (p>0.05) for rotation of the cervical spine. Statistical analysis of palmar interossei grip strength after each investigation also showed no significant difference (p>0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that rotation of the cervical spine increased significantly after a CT lift. BLT showed no change to rotation of the cervical spine. Descriptive statistics suggested a slight increase of palmar interossei grip strength after a BLT treatment. However, data analysis showed no statistical significant changes to the palmar interossei muscles aft r the application of a CT lift or a BLT technique. Databases: The following databases were used in order to research the subject area: SciVerse Science Direct, SwetsWise, Medline, PubMed, Web of Knowledge, Cinahl
