Abstract
This dissertation is looking at the relationship between back pain and the nursing profession to ascertain if this was linked to specific wards, i.e., those wards with greater patient handling was there B link to gender, age or length of service of the nurse; also incorporating how in the transference of patients, could nurses possibly avoid suffering from back pain. Three hospitals in Kent were targeted for this dissertation, in which a questionnaire was required to be completed. This dissertation therefore is primary data gathering and was targeted to a wide range of nursing - this encompassed nurses from a variety of wards, units and specialist departments. The questionnaire targeted Registered General Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, Health Care Assistants and Student Nurses Unfortunately, the response rate to this questionnaire was poor, with Registered General Nurses making up the bulk of the responders. As a result of this, this group were chosen to form the basis of this This dissertation found that nursing is still very a female orientated profession, with back pain which predominantly lasts for short spells of time (days), however, in this questionnaire almost one fifth of suffers were in continuous pain. 81% of nurses commented that they had not suffered from back pain prior to entering the nursing profession, 80% reported pain was predominantly in their lower back and that this was made worse by being in one position for long periods of time.
