- Abstract
- Objective To investigate whether Balanced Ligamentous Technique or Articulation of Ribs 4-7 would create a change in spirometry readings (FEVI, FVC, FER, PEF). Design Single-blinded randomised controlled independent measures. Methods Lung function parameters were measured by hand-held-turbine spirometer. Forced expiratory outblow were performed 3 times prior and after intervention. The interventions are BLT, Articulation or Control Claying supine for 10 minutes). Results 50 European School of Osteopathic students were recruited to the study (50% Male), 2 were excluded in data analysis as they were recognised as outliers. Shapiro-Wilk and Levenes test for homogeneity of variance were used to check for normal distribution in across baseline measures and all spirometer values. One-way ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis were used to test for statistical significance. The null hypothesis cannot be rejected as all p-values >0.05. Discussion Inconclusive results were found which was similar to other current studies. The reasons of which could be due to poor application of techniques with a one time, pre-determined treatment. The choice of the outcome measure is also discussed. Conclusion Despite BLT and Articulation of the middle ribs have no significant influence over lung function parameters in this study, further research should be warranted to investigate the effects of Osteopathic techniques on the body.
