- Abstract
- Background: Snoring affects many people and their partner's sleep and in turn affects their quality life during the daytime. It would be beneficial to people suffering with OSA to be able to reduce the amount of snoring Research Into this area have found a positive affect with therapy on the anterior throat, but none have been specific to the Suprahyoid muscles. Objective: To investigate the effect that osteopathic technique on the Suprahyoid muscles would have on the snoring of a patient suffering from OSA. Design: The study consisted of a single case study. AB design. Method: A single participant was recorded for 2 weeks to obtain baseline characteristics for 3 variables (snore-score, percentage of time snoring and decibel level of snore). After the first 2 weeks of recording took place, 4 weeks of daily treatment at 10-minute intervals was carried out. After the treatment was completed a further 2 weeks of recording took place. The before and after results were recorded on marked line graphs. The participant also recorded a questionnaire pre and post intervention on their quality of sleep and general sleepiness with the PSQI and EPSS questionnaires respectively. Results: The results found from each of the 3 variables measured that there was no significant difference after 4 weeks of treatment. The results from the questionnaires found a marked improvement in both the quality of sleep and daily sleepiness of the participant. Discussion: The results did not find any significant difference whereas other previous studies that carried out physical therapy on the anterior throat had. The qualitative results of the participant's sleep quality and daily sleepiness did improve which supports other literature out there. Improvements could have been made in the study design to have had longer for an intervention to take place and to have carried out the experiment on more than one role in snoring with patients with OSA compared to other structures of the anterior throat. However, this study would have to be carried out again with more control over certain variables to get a proper understanding of the effect of osteopathic treatment on the prevalence of snoring.
