Abstract
Background: Body Awareness (BA) has been shown to have significant benefits to a number of clinical conditions There is also evidence of a correlation between improvements in aspects of BA including proprioception, interoception and body image with the increased performance of an athlete. This study looks at the possible effects of Osteopathy in the Cranial Field (OCF) on BA. Objective: To measure the change in BA from OCF treatment using the Body Awareness Questionnaire (BAQ) and the Private Body Consciousness Sub-scale (PBCS). Design: A crossover study. Method: A total of 5 participants took part in this study and were included if they were over 18, male and a footballer in Gillingham Football Academy. Exclusion criteria included those participants with contraindications for OCF techniques and that were already receiving osteopathic treatment. Participants were randomized to be in the treatment group followed by the control group or vice versa. BA measurements were taken as a baseline and following the 1st and 2nd interventions. Results: The Kruskall-Wallis test was performed on the sets of data from both the BAQ and the PBCS. The results showed no significant differences between the baseline measurements, the control group and the treatment group (p>0.05). Discussion: An increase in BA has been shown to have benefits to the performance and injury prevention of athletes. The BAQ and the PBCS are reported as a reliable and valid method of BA measurement. There are many therapies that have shown an increase in BA. However, this study has shown no significant effect of OCF on BA. Conclusion: Although a number of therapies have been shown to benefit BA, this study showed that OCF does not significantly alter BA and that a larger sample size is required to increase the power of further studies.
