- Background: Sports osteopathy as a developing field of research produced by osteopaths could encourage recognition from other professions Improvements in vertical jump performance (VJP) have been well documented utilising strengthening and stretching techniques in a long-term scenario. Specific techniques applied to hip flexors could reduce hip extension resistance during VJP thus improving it. This could have beneficial implication within a sporting environment. Objective: Is there a difference in vertical jump displacement when either Eccentric Loading (EL) or Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stretching is applied to the psoas. Design: Randomized controlled experiment with 3 groups of which 2 were interventions and 1 a control. Methods: Inclusion Criteria: Any student that was currently attending the European School of Osteopathy on the integrated master's course. Exclusion Criteria: Students who had pain, pathology or treatment of the Lumbopelvic region & Lower Extremity: Fracture within the last 6 months; osteopenia or osteoporosis; consent withdrawal. Pre-intervention measurements of the outcome measure were ascertained by recording displacement of markers in the Y axis, in the form of WMV files, using Logitech 1.3megapixel webcam. One of 3 interventions were then performed, post-intervention measurements were collected as per pre-intervention. The resultant files were analysed via Tracker Video analysis and Mode/ling Tool Version 4.91 (Brown 2009). Microsoft Excel was used to store and analyse data. Summary and inferential statistics were calculated using a combination of Excel & Analyse-IT and statistical power of results was achieved by G*Power. Results: Sixty participants were recruited during the study. One participant was excluded due to a random error leaving 59 participants in total: 20 in group 1 (Control), 20 in group 2 (EL) and 19 in group 3 (PNF). Analysis of the data accumulated indicated there was no significant change in mean Y axis displacement in all groups (p>0.05).Discussion: Neither EL or PNF created changes in Y axis displacement compared to control. This is consistent with other acute setting research with long-term equivalent showing increase in PNF stretching on VJP and other measures of athletic ability. This study appears to suggest EL or PNF of the psoas may not generate significant changes in cohort's VJP. Conclusion: Neither EL or PNF of the psoas achieved a significant effect on mean Y axis displacement and thus VJP. Further research is advised taking into account limitations found in this study.
