Abstract
Background It is not known how opinions, attitudes and beliefs of clinic tutors at the ESO affect the students they tutor. Non-Specific Low Back Pain is a controversial topic amongst tutors at the European School of Osteopathy, as shown by one qualitative study. Students who are evidence based, who would use NSLBP as a diagnosis, are asked what effect tutor attitudes, beliefs and opinions have on their use of NSLBP guidance, as well as their opinion on guidelines. Objective To investigate whether students are affected by the attitudes, opinions and beliefs of their tutor and their own attitudes towards guidelines. Design A qualitative study using a phenomenological approach. Methods 8 Structured, in-depth interviews, were recorded lasting approximately 20 minutes. These were used to gather information where common themes were found. The themes were used to produce a thematic framework for data analysis. Interviews were conducted at the European School of Osteopathy in the teaching clinic, and at the teaching campus, each interview was in a quiet and undisturbed room. Participants were 4th year students, selected on their responses to a short questionnaire. Each participant was given an information sheet and a consent form. Results 8 students were interviewed for this study. Two main themes were found, these were “the perceived hierarchy within the ESO clinic” and “where students seek information from”. Other themes were “opinions”, “challenges” and “NSLBP”. Discussion Wider research revealed the inconsistent use of guidelines in Osteopathy. The results from this study showed that student behaviour can be altered based on clinic tutors’ opinions on guidelines. A dogmatic and authoritarian influence was felt by participants, and these teaching styles were found to not be as effective as problem based learning or paternalistic teaching styles. Conclusion In summary, eminence based tutoring affects some evidence informed students. The effect is reduced use of NSLBP and where the students seek new information from. This may inform clinic tutors about the use of Expert opinion, as students greatly respect Expert input however it should not replace research guidelines.
