Methodology
In this non-randomized, non-blind, prospective clinical case study, children (n=9, 100% male, age:4-12 years) are examined, that are being treated pediatrically medicamentous in an acute asthma attack according to the national guidelines. Compared to the control group (n=4) the children of the intervention group (n=5) receive additional osteopathic treatment according to the findings, on the first three days. Before and after the three treatments the partial oxygen pressure (pO2), the pulse and the peak exspiratory flow (PEF) are measured. In the course of the next 21 days the children of the control- and intervention group document their PEF twice daily. On the first and on the 21. day all parents answer a questionaire portraying their child’s quality of life relating to their health
Results
Directly after the osteopathic treatment, the pO2 improves significantly (p=0,044). However, this does not last until the next day. The pulse and relative PEF, conveyed in percentage of the nominal value of healthy children of the same height and weight (PEF%), do not show significant changes after the treatment. However, PEF% and pulse have the tendency to decrease. In both groups one can observe a significant increase of the PEF% and the quality of life in the three weeks, however there is no significant difference between the intervention- and control group. The improvement of the disease related quality of life is more obvious for the children treated osteopathically, compared to the control group, but not significant. For the children who started out with athletic impairments, the duration of the impairment was marginally significantly (p=0,056) shorter in the osteopathically treated children than in the control group.
Critical Reflection/Perspectives/Conclusions
This study indicates, that an osteopathic treatment for an asthma attack has a positive influence on the pO2 , as well as a long term effect on the athletic performance and on the quality of life
