- Abstract
- Portfolios are a popular addition to undergraduate courses yet few studies have evaluated their implementation. The concept of the portfolio is based on sound theory with principles consistent with osteopathic philosophy and practice. A clinic portfolio was introduced in December 1998 to the third and fourth year of the BSO degree course. This exploratory study used preliminary interviews to develop a questionnaire with the aim of exploring students’ use and experience of the portfolio. Results demonstrated that students appreciated the potential of the portfolio as a learning tool. However, a significant number expressed negative attitudes to their experience of the portfolio. Students making most use of the portfolio were found to have more positive attitudes towards it. Female students had significantly more negative attitudes than male students. Students’ specific concerns relating to the portfolio were also identified. It was concluded that students are primarily motivated by the assessment structure of the course, resulting in the portfolio being viewed as a low priority. Recommendations for improving students’ use of and attitudes towards the portfolio include: increased level of resources such as time available and tutor support; refocusing of the course so students are not purely motivated by examinations; introducing more structured tasks to the portfolio to encourage students to engage in reflective activities.
