- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to determine whether Muscle Energy Technique (MET) combined with therapeutic heat is more effective at promoting increased hamstring flexibility than using MET alone. The study was experimental, of different subject (independent measures) design.Sixty-six healthy subjects between the ages of 18-42 yrs (mean age 28.9 yrs ? 6.35) were recruited from the British School of Osteopathy student population. Nine females and thirteen males were randomly assigned to each condition. The three treatment conditions were MET, MET combined with therapeutic heat and a control. Hot-water bottles were used as the heat modality. Pre and post-treatment measurements were obtained using the passive knee extension test (PKE) and fluid inclinometer. Data was analyzed using the Related t and Mann-Whitney U-tests. The results suggest that MET is effective at promoting increase in hamstring flexibility (p<0.0272). No significant difference was found between MET combined with prior application of heat and MET alone in this respect (p<1.00). This study supports the use of MET in clinical practice but does not suggest that the prior application of therapeutic heat increases its efficacy.
