- Abstract
- A study to test reliability of Leg Length Difference assessments, comparing two simple techniques appropriate for quick use in the clinic environment. These were the Thigh-Leg technique and a second similar method using a Frame apparatus. Both methods were used to assess the leg lengths, and two examiners carried out the measurements on 30 subjects (Examiner 1 was the author and Examiner 2 comprised a group of five individuals). All the assessments were done twice in order to estimate Intra-rator reliability; The Inter-rator reliability for the two methods was derived using the average of two measurement values from each examiner. Pearson’s correlation coefficient (r) was calculated to estimate the levels of reliability: Intra-rator reliability – Frame method r = 0.970, Intra-rator reliability – Thigh-Leg method r = 0.903, Inter-rator reliability – Frame method r = 0.792, Inter-rator reliability – Thigh-Leg method r = 0.750.Leg length difference assessments using the Frame method appeared to provide the most reliable measurements for repeated use by the same examiner. However, the reliability of this same method between the examiners was considered poor.Leg length difference assessments using the Thigh-Leg method was shown to be less reliable than the Frame method for repeated measurements by the same examiner. The reliability was poor for repeat reading using the Thigh-Leg method between the two examiners used. The general level of reliability achieved was less than anticipated; in view of the uncertainty concerning the accepted tolerances of Leg length Difference before adversely effecting the musculoskeletal health of an individual, the reliability of both of these methods may be considered acceptable.
