- Abstract
- Introduction: All research viewed agrees that there is movement at the sacroiliac joint. The magnitude has been documented between 2 and 12 degrees, with the axes at which these movements occur being the main controversial issue. The transverse axis is commonly hypothesised about, with the coronal/frontal and horizontal/oblique axes being unexplained other than their existence. The aim of this study is to correlate the data collected on the magnitude and axes of movement in order to reach more conclusive theories. In understanding the dynamics of the sacroiliac further, the orthodox and complimentary medical worlds can perform evaluation and treatment more effectively. This review will also be able to observe problematic trends in past research, with subsequent suggestions on improving the standard in the future. Method: To achieve the aims set out above a search of literature in this area was performed. Any studies conforming to the inclusion criteria were then marked according to the methodological assessment criteria to determine their reliability and validity. Results: There were two studies scoring 55 out of the possible 100 marks available. The two most problematic areas were the methodological assessment quality and data analysis sections. Conclusion: This review concluded that there is not much validity or reliability in the studies marked, due primarily to the poor methodologies adopted. The three leading studies did however all agree upon 2 degrees of movement at the sacroiliac joint, so with further research this maybe proved to be approximately correct. Theories on the axes of movement did not correlate between the studies. This is definitely an area for future research with an increase in the quality of the methodology required.
