- Abstract
- This study was carried out to investigate the role of the Osteopath in the treatment of the elite athlete, with specific reference to their approach to the psychological reactions which may occur.Interviews were carried out with 12 qualified Osteopathic practitioners, all of who were tutors at the British School of Osteopathy. Information was analysed and categorised to determine the extent of knowledge concerning an athlete's emotional reactions to injury, and the Osteopath's method of addressing treatment and management.Phases of specific emotions have been identified in sports medicine literature, this was acknowledged by the interviewed practitioners. However, as has recently been found in sports medicine, the researcher found that Osteopaths indicated that the psychological reactions were more complex. Specific emotions were found to be noticed, but were effected by factors such as, characteristics of the athletes and their ability to cope with the injury. The clinical relevance of the conclusions drawn from this study is that theOsteopathic profession's holistic approach proves to be of great relevance when it comes to effectively managing the injured athlete. This study revealed that an understanding of the athlete is required and that encouragement, advice, support and empowerment of the patient are important aspects to be considered by the practitioner.
