- Abstract
- A feasibility study, whose primary aim is to examine whether 'sub curves' exist within the normal S shaped curve of the thoracolumbar spine. The secondary aim of the project was to see if there was a relationship between the centroid of the vertebral bodies and the posterior tips of the spinous processes.Fourth year students of the British School of Osteopathy were randomly selected and asked to plot a trapezoid computer image over the shape of the vertebral body and also to plot the posterior tip of the spinous process on two, digitised MRI scans of the thoracolumbar spine. This was assessed as an inter-rater test. A further study of intra-rater measures was taken. The study suggests that there is a 'sub curve' within the centroids of the vertebral bodies. Due to the small sample of the study, its findings are deemed inconclusive. Therefore, the author recommends further research on a larger sample into the presence of 'sub curves'.
