- BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders have a high prevalence in the general population. Therefore a wide range of treatment stands to be beneficial to a great number of patients. Although this pathology has varying definitions, the pathophysiology and aetiology are well documented. Research has been shown a neurological link between the upper cervical segments and the temporomandibular joint. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the short-term effect on range of cervical motion during the flexion-rotation test after a set of manual techniques on the temporomandibular joint in subjects with temporomandibular disorders. METHOD: Seventy-nine subjects were recruited, of which 20 male and 59 female, 33.03 ± 7.836 of age. These patients were randomly assigned to an experimental group which received a set of manual techniques or to a placebo group which received a sham intervention on the temporomandibular joint. All measurements regarding cervical rotation were assessed using the modified CROM device. RESULTS: The experimental group and placebo group were equal for gender and age (respectively Independent T-test p=0.842; Pearson Chi-square test p=0.997). Both groups were equal for pre-intervention scores (Mann Whitney test: p= 0.381 left rotation and p= 0.783 right rotation), and both showed a significant difference for post-intervention scores. No Significant difference was shown between the experimental and placebo group (ANCOVA test: p= 0.178 left rotation and p= 0.345 right rotation). DISCUSSION: The methodology of this study has to be improved in terms of measurement, blinding and sample size. CONCLUSION: No short-term effect on the mobility as a result of ATM treatment in patients with TMD has been shown.
