- Abstract
- Diet and nutrition are moving toward the forefront of modern health care to assist in addressing the growing population suffering from chronic diseases. Outside the mainstream of medicine, fasting is considered as an efficient method of dietary intervention. However, studies focused on fasting are scarce. The purpose of this current study was to question the early reaction of people within the first 72 hours of a fast. A questionnaire fitting this purpose was designed and tested to fit the study parameters. A total of 48 individuals completed the questionnaire these peoples were recruited from a population that had previously completed a fast. The results were then analysed through a Chi-squared method. The current study showed statistical significance between fasting habits and general symptoms reported (P=0.04), overall fasting experience and generals symptoms reported (p=0.01) and overall fasting experience and hunger reported (p=0.02). The overall results indicated that most of the participants reacted in some ways while fasting. Discussion of the results showed that while most people responded to a fast, their responses could be further assessed. Further research would allow a better understanding of these reactions.
