Background Lower limb arthroplasty (LLA) is a cost effective treatment modality for advanced osteoarthritis of the hip and knee. While the standard physiotherapy (SPT) care and exercise regime have been shown to be effective in returning patients back to performing activities of daily living, it does not address other factors included in quality of life measurements. Objective: To investigate the impact on quality of life that osteopathic intervention has on patients after LLA in comparison to a Control Group receiving standard post LLA physiotherapy care using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) osteoarthritis index LK 3.1 questionnaire.
DesignPilot Study.SettingThe clinic of the primary researcher and the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital Physiotherapy clinic, Collingwood, Ontario.Participants14 patients who had recent hip or knee replacement surgery.InterventionsSPT care (the control group), or SPT care with osteopathic manual therapy (OMT) (the experimental group). The STP care was administered by registered physiotherapists and the OMT was administered by the lead researcher. The study consisted of 8 sessions of physiotherapy per patient over 4 weeks in the control group and 8 sessions of physiotherapy plus 4 sessions of OMT per patient over 4 weeks in the experimental group.Main outcome measureThe comparison of the control and experimental groups WOMAC Quality of Life (QoL) questionnaire data between the pre treatment and after the last OMT intervention.ResultsThe control group outperformed the experimental group. Both groups had statistically significant results (experimental group difference in means of 34.5 points and a Standard Deviation (SD) of +/-6.1 while the control group difference in means for the same time period was 38.8, SD of +/-9.5).ConclusionsThe inclusion of an OMT intervention to the standard care for LLA recovery did not show any benefits in improving the quality of life for the subjects over the SPT care provided in the hospital clinic. - presented at
