- Abstract
- Context While athletic therapists’ are required to participate in continuing education for advancing competency, and osteopathy is an accepted continuing educational unit, no research exists to determine the impact of adding osteopathy to existing athletic therapy practices.ObjectiveThe purpose of this research using a survey method approach was to investigate the impact, identify trends and future research following the application, analysis and interpretation of statistical data.Method A cross sectional study using an electronic questionnaire was used to survey members in good standing of the Canadian Athletic Therapists’ Association who are also osteopathic manual practitioners. General demographics, continuing education preferences and the impact of osteopathy data were gathered.ResultsThe small sample size and use of Likert scale contributed to non-normal distribution, ruling out the use of t-tests, ANOVA, repeated measures ANOVA or cross-tabs, therefore non parametric Kruskal-Wallis (.05, including Chi-Squared) tests were used. Little or no statistical significance was shown between the demographic data and the impact of adding osteopathy, however as reported by athletic therapists impact trends were identified: increase skill set; increase patient numbers and revenue; treating head injuries; new types of patients.ConclusionThere was little or no statistical significance, however trends were identified showing the impact of adding osteopathy to existing athletic therapy practices. Future research could strengthen these findings and validate the impact that osteopathy has on athletic therapy.
