RESEARCH TITLE: Research on the added value of hypogastric visceral manipulations to musculoskeletal techniques performed on women with chronic non-specific low back pain: a single blind randomized controlled clinical investigation.
BACKGROUND: Demand for the effective treatment of chronic non-specific low back pain in women is increasing. OBJECTIVE: To investigate if adding hypogastric visceral manipulations to musculoskeletal techniques in the treatment of women with chronic non-specific low back pain has an additional value in reduction of pain intensity and disability severity. METHODS: A sample of 20 female individuals, 30 (20- 55) years of age, with chronic non-specific low back pain was recruited. Participants were randomly allocated to the experimental group 1 (Ex1) or the experimental group 2 (Ex2). Ex1 (n=10) received only musculoskeletal techniques. Ex2 (n=10) received both musculoskeletal techniques and hypogastric visceral manipulations. Five treatment sessions were conducted, based on osteopathic principles. Pain intensity and disability severity were measured using Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire at three measurement points: baseline (M1), during the fourth contact at the beginning of the treatment session (M2), and during the sixth contact (M3). The changes in pain intensity and disability severity were compared between the groups using ANCOVA. RESULTS: No significant difference was found in pain intensity or disability severity between the groups when comparing M2 and M1. No significant difference was found between the groups for disability severity when comparing M3 and M1. However, a significant reduction in pain intensity was found when comparing M3 and M1 (p=0.03). DISCUSSION: A significant difference was found in pain intensity between the groups over a long period of time. The small sample size (power 74%) and relatively low pain intensity reporting throughout the study are the main limitations of the study. CONCLUSION: Adding hypogastric visceral manipulations to musculoskeletal techniques helps reduce pain intensity in women with chronic non-specific low back pain on the long term, but did not reduce disability.
