- Abstract
- BackgroundCurrently no known data for the use of social media in educating both the public and clinicians on osteopathy exists. There is a public requisite for evidence-based knowledge through social media. This study seeks to understand how frequently osteopathic educational posts are shared with a comparison to chiropractic educational posts. MethodsAn analysis and comparison of 474 tweets within #osteopathy and 3747 tweets with #chiropractic has be performed, with the following subject matters referred to in each hashtag: referenced, educational, advert, meme or GIF (graphic interchange format), picture, exercise video or picture, general comment, blog or other posts. Results#osteopathy tweets, that where both educational and referenced, had a frequency of only 33 in comparison to #chiropractic referenced tweets, which totalled 75. Educational tweets represented a frequency 125 and 875 for #osteopathy and #chiropractic respectively. ConclusionsThe requirement for more educational osteopathic posts is evident. An increase in referenced posts, including links to other social media (Facebook, Instagram etc.), personal blogs and websites will increase public and clinical knowledge and understanding of osteopathic diagnosis and treatment.
