- Abstract
- Background: Although acknowledged by early osteopaths, the effect of Manual Therapy Techniques (MTT) on the body’s immune system is today often overlooked or even disregarded. Objective: This study aims at reviewing the current literature for studies that investigated the influence of MTT on the surrogate markers of immune function. Method: A systematic review of randomised and non-Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) studies. Results: Sixteen studies were retrieved and reviewed using the Downs & Black (D&B) checklist. Healthy subjects and subjects with HIV-infection, breast cancer and leukaemia were considered. Although four over eight of the high quality rated RCTs on the D&B checklist were inconclusive, the rest of the studies showed a generalised boost to immune function from MTT across varying age groups, genders and conditions. Conclusion: Further research should be encouraged into this field to assess MTT as a potential non-pharmaceutical approach to therapy.
