TITLE: A set of osteopathic techniques in adults with temporomandibular dysfunctions
RESEARCH TITLE: Research as to the short-term effect of a set of osteopathic techniques on pain and maximal mouth opening in adults with temporomandibular dysfunction, a single blind randomized placebo controlled clinical trial.
BACKGROUND: To the author’s knowledge, no studies investigated the influence of osteopathic techniques on pain intensity on the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and the range of motion during maximal mouth opening. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the short-term effect on pain intensity on the NRS and maximal mouth opening (MMO) after a set of osteopathic techniques. METHOD: Patients with ATM dysfunction were recruited in collaboration with different Antwerp hospitals and were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n=25) and a placebo group (n=25). The experimental group (EG) received a set of osteopathic techniques while the placebo group (PG) received a sham intervention on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Both groups received two treatments over a period of one week. Pain intensity was measured before and after treatment using a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and the MMO with a calliper. RESULTS: The study group (n=50), 27 women; 23 men, 46.52 ±16.16 years of age, was randomly assigned to the EG or PG. Both groups showed no difference for gender and age. Comparing EG with PG after the interventions, significant differences for MMO have been shown (t-test p < .001 ; Mann-Whitney U test p < .001) and in pain intensity on the NRS (t-test p < .001; Mann- Whitney U test p < .001). The Wilcoxon signed rank test showed in the EG, a significant increase in MMO (p < .001) and a significant decrease in pain intensity on the NRS (p < .001). DISCUSSION: The methodology of this research needs to be improved by double blinding and a bigger sample size. CONCLUSION: No difference in age and gender is found. Results show an increase in maximal mouth opening and a decrease in pain intensity on the NRS after a set of osteopathic techniques. Further investigation might be useful for the long-term effects.
