TITLE: The added value of osteopathic treatment in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. RESEARCH TITLE: Research as to the added value of osteopathic treatment on symptoms and quality of life in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: a randomized controlled clinical trial.
BACKGROUND: To the authors knowledge only a few studies investigated the role of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to dizziness and balance in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and no study so far investigated the role of OMT, specific on BPPV. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the possible added value of osteopathic treatment on symptoms and quality of life (QOL) in patients with BPPV. METHOD: Patients with BPPV were randomly assigned to an intervention group (IG) and a control group (CG). The IG received a sets of osteopathic techniques in addition to the individual necessary particle repositioning manoeuver (PRM) once a week, within a timeframe of three weeks. The CG only received an individual necessary PRM. The Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) was used to evaluate symptoms and the RAND36 questionnaire to evaluate quality of life (QOL). The questionnaires were filled at intake, and one week after the third treatment. RESULTS: The population (n=24), 12 men and 12 women, showed no difference for age (61,65 ±13,02) and BMI (26,91 ±3,05) (independent T-test p - Abstract
