TITLE: Influence of an osteopathic normalisation of the phrenic nerve on lung function.
RESEARCH TITLE: Research as to the effect of phrenic nerve normalisation on lung function in healthy persons: a randomised placebo controlled double blind clinical trial.
BACKGROUND: The phrenic nerve is a difficult structure to influence directly given its anatomical position. This study aims to influence the Phrenic nerve via the surrounding structures. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the short-term effects of an osteopathic intervention on the function of the phrenic nerve. METHOD: Subjects were randomly assigned to an experimental group that received an osteopathic intervention and a placebo group that received a sham TENS intervention. The participants had a normal spirometry and no history of respiratory disease. The effect was tested immediately after the treatment both for the osteopathic intervention group as for the placebo group. RESULTS: Participants (n = 30) showed no preliminary difference for gender, age, BMI. There was no preliminary significant difference for FVC (p = 0,82), FEV1 (p = 0,93), and PEF (p = 0,55) between both groups. In the osteopathic intervention group a significant effect was noticed for PEF (Paired samples T-test: p = 0,026). In the placebo group there was no statistical significant effect found for all variables. The effect of the osteopathic group in comparison with the placebo group did not show a statistical significant result for PEF (Anova: p = 0,060) or for FEV1 (Anova: p = 0,069). The power of the study was poor (post hoc analysis: 48%). To obtain a power of 80%, the study must have a population of 25 subjects in each group. For further research, it is needed to test different sets of osteopathic techniques. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that there is an inhibitory effect for the osteopathic intervention on the phrenic nerve in healthy persons without a history of respiratory disease.
