TITLE: Low back and pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy: an osteopathic approach.
RESEARCH TITLE: Research as to the added value of an osteopathic treatment in patients with low back and pelvic girdle complaints during pregnancy: a randomized controlled clinical study.
BACKGROUND: Low back and pelvic girdle pain is common in pregnant women. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the benefits of osteopathic treatment in pregnant women with low back pain and/or pelvic girdle pain. METHOD: Pain and disability in daily activities were evaluated with the VAS and the Roland Disability Questionnaire (RDQ) at intake and after a 4 weeks intervention of osteopathic treatment in addition to a 4 weeks exercise program. RESULTS: Thirty-eight patients 30.5 SD 2.7 years of age participated in this study. No significant difference between groups for age, length, weight and presence of pelvic instability, and a comparable variance has been shown at intake. The RDQ, showed no significant difference between T0 and T1 for standard treatment group (Wilcoxon Signed Ranks, p=0.083) and a significant difference between T0 and T1 for osteopathic treatment group (Wilcoxon Signed Ranks p=0.012). The osteopathic group showed a significant decrease of pain compared to controls (Ancova, p=0.017). There was no significant difference between groups for RDQ at T1 (Ancova, p=0.864). DISCUSSION: Further research on a larger group is needed to investigate these effects. A more complete understanding of the role of osteopathy in PLBP and PPGP is needed. CONCLUSION: A significant decrease of pain intensity has been shown in the osteopathic treatment group, compared to controls. - presented at
