- Abstract
- A qualitative semi-structured interview study was performed on thirteen tutors at the British School of Osteopathy (BSO). The focus of the investigation was to examine the current use of gait assessment in osteopathic practise, within a historical and philosophical context. It was found that the most common reason for gait assessment, was if a patient complained of symptoms when walking, closely followed by patients who presented with lower extremity problems and recurring or chronic problems. The most frequently mentioned advantages were its use as a diagnostic aid, and that the practise of gait assessment was in accordance with osteopathic principals as it could be used to assess function. Disadvantages that were discussed most commonly were the problem of creating an artificial environment that may adversely affect the patients gait and the small size of the clinic room, preventing the patient from getting into their stride. Most osteopaths felt there was a normal gait to which a patient could be compared. The most frequently mentioned components were: heel strike, weight bearing on the lateral foot arch (mid stance), toe off, knee & hip flexion / extension, spinal rotation, optimal neurological development & integration and freedom / ease of movement.Gait assessment as practised by a sample of BSO osteopaths was found to conform to osteopathic principals and philosophy and to be of use in osteopathic practise. The main limitations of the investigation were the interview skills of the investigator, the number of subjects participating, maintaining 100% consistency between interviews and a complex coding system.
