- Abstract
- BACKGROUND: In the United States 1/5th of the population suffer from tinnitus. The symptom of tinnitus has in less than 0.5% an identifiable causative lesion. PURPOSE: to give an overview of current research which focuses on possible palliative treatment strategies. METHOD: Database search in pub med and elsevier, 1989-2001. Inclusion criteria: The keywords-Tinnitus, treatment of tinnitus and masking tinnitus. RESULTS: The following treatment methods are presented in the study: Electrostimulation (EPS), transcutaneous nerve stimulation (TNS), acupuncture, pharmacological treatment, group therapy and education, biofeedback, micro-vascular decompression and masking. Those methods directed against the neural activity, micro-circulation, and the common symptoms of depression, seem to show most promising results. These are: EPS, psychopharmacological treatment, group therapy and education, and micro-vascular decompression. DISCUSSION: For a more in depth evaluation of the results, and a comparative analysis, future research would benefit from standardised research protocols and methods, such as prospective randomised controlled trials.
