Abstract
The object of this survey was to investigate the public's awareness of osteopathy, physiotherapy and chiropractic. The purpose being to assess how well informed the public is about osteopathy compared to the other therapies. Furthermore the most usefulways of informing and educating the public about osteopathy was also investigated. This was done using a self-completion questionnaire. The purpose of this study was to enable the public to gain the full benefits available from osteopathic treatment. With more patients using osteopaths for a wider variety of complaints, this would provide greater job satisfaction and interest for the osteopath. There would also be greater number of patient's for the use of research and for the furthering of professional development in various areas. With more people using osteopathy, there would be a reduction in the demand on the National Health Service and a decrease in expenditure on chronic care and work related loss of earnings. Using Chi squared analysis, the results of the survey showed that osteopathy was significantly more popular than physiotherapy or chiropractic with the 0-35 and 66+ age groups. A significant number of participants in the same age groups did not know which therapy they would choose to treat a muscle or joint complaint, or would choose none of the therapies. Significant numbers of participants in all age groups did not know how effective osteopathy would be in the treatment of back pain.
