- Abstract
- Strain Counter Strain (SCS) techniques are used in Osteopathic Practice to reduce pain and increase joint range of motion (ROM). The Aim of this study was to investigate the effect of SCS technique applied to Levator Scapulae (LS) muscle measured with the Cervical Range of Motion (CROM) Device. Thirty randomly selected subjects 15 male and 15 females aged between 18 and 30 were recruited from the student body of the British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy. The subjects cervical range of motionwas measured three times, to obtain a mean measurement; in flexion, extension, right and left rotation and right and left sidebending with the CROM device. SCS technique was applied to the right Levator Scapulae muscle. Three further reading of all planes of motion were recorded in the same manner as before. Left and Right sidebending were used as a control because LS is not recruited for these movements. Statistical analysis using a T-test Paired Two Sample for Means demonstrated that there was no statistical effect (p>0.05) of SCS technique on flexion, extension, and left rotation. Right rotation produced a significant increase (p<0.05) in cervical range of motion. The hypothesis was accepted that there was a significant increase in right rotation after the application of SCS to the Right LS muscle. It was concluded that although the right rotation was statistically significant further research needs to be performed to investigate the validity of these findings.
