- Abstract
- This study was designed to compare the effect of two different hydrotherapy techniques on the symptoms associated with primary dysmenorrhoea. The hydrotherapy techniques used in this study were alternative hot and cold sitz baths and cold water treading.Fourteen subjects were used to compare the techniques for this study, in which they acted as their own controls. A symptom questionnaire was used to compare the symptoms associated with dysmenorrhoea, for four consecutive menstrual cycles. The first menstrual cycle symptoms recorded were used as the control for the study. The second and fourth menstrual cycles were treated with the hydrotherapy techniques. The third menstruation was after a treatment-free month, which also acted as a control and prevented overlap of the hydrotherapy techniques, in case the treatment had a lag-period. Half of the subjects under-went the sitz bath first followed by the control month and then the cold water treading, the other half of the experimental group had the cold water treading treatment first, then a control month, and finally the sitz bath treatment. The results showed that both the sitz bath and cold water treading treatments results were found to be significant at a 95% confidence interval (p <0.05) for a two-tailed test, measuring severity and frequency of primary dysmenorrhoea. There was no significant difference found between the two hydrotherapy treatments.
