- Abstract
- Low back pain (LBP) is a common complaint. It cost the business and healthcare industries millions of pounds a year, and causes millions of people to be unhappy and in pain throughout their lifetime. Certain occupations have higher incidences than others. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of LBP in the teaching profession and highlight the possible risk factors associated with this occupation. This was achieved by 51 teachers completing a questionnaire. The results were analysed usising descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The results were also compared to a national survey, 'The prevalence of back pain in great Britain'. The comparison showed that there was a higher incidence of LBP in teachers, both on the day of survey and within the last 12 months. The survey also showed that there was a marginal increased incidence of LBP suffered by teachers in their lifetime. However using the chi squared test showed that there was no statistical evidence to suggest that therewas an association between LBP and the length of time as a teacher. There was also no statistical evidence to suggest that smoking, stress, exercise participation and preventative measures taken to avoid LBP prevented or decreases the incidence of LBP. 57.9% of teachers suffering from LBP attributed the back pain to their occupation, and 7.8% did not know the cause of their pain. 68.4% of teachers suffering from LBP sought treatment of some kind for their problem, and out of these 21.1% visited an osteopath for treatment. Osteopathic and Naturopathic advice would be useful in the treatment and prevention of LBP in regards to eliminating possible risk factors, offering postural and lifting advice.
