Abstract
Strengthening exercises are used throughout rehabilitation programmes for joint instability, although exact methods suitable for use in an Osteopathic practice are vague and their effects on joint range of movement are difficult to measure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of hamstring-strengthening exercises on the extension at the knee joint. It was hypothesised that the strengthening exercises would significantly reduce knee extension. Five asymptomatic subjects, one male and four female, aged between 19 and 31 years, were recruited from the second and third year students at the British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy. Subjects performed isometric hamstring-strengthening exercises on one knee over a period of five weeks. Measurement of passive knee extension was performed before and after the study using a universal goniometer, along with MVIC peak force and total power measured on the DMG. Statistical analysis using a student paired t-test demonstrated that the hamstring-strengthening exercises had produced a significant decrease (p<0.05) in trained knee extension, and a significant increase in MVIC total power (p<0.05). However, the statistical analysis with respect to MVIC peak force was inconclusive. It was concluded that the hamstring-strengthening exercises were effective for decreasing the length of the hamstring muscle group as measured by passive range of knee extension.
