- Abstract
- Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent joint disorder in the world. It was previously seen as degenerative 'wear and tear' but is now recognised as a failure of repair processes. Research has shown that several nutritional interventions, especially glucosamine sulphate and antioxidants, hold promise for treating this disorder. Osteopaths and chiropractors receive varying levels of nutritional training; this study examined their opinions and use of nutritional interventions in osteoarthritis by means of postal and email questionnaires. A high proportion of respondents rated their original nutritional training as not adequate, but there was a very high level of usage of nutritional interventions among the respondents, particularly for general healthy eating advice and glucosamine sulphate. For almost all measures osteopaths and chiropractors were homogenous, supporting the view that in some areas osteopathy and chiropractic have practical similarities.
