Abstract
A wealth of historical literature suggests that osteopathy has an important role to play in treatment of non-musculoskeletal conditions. The aims of this study were to investigate to what extent osteopaths involve themselves in diagnosis and management of diabetes mellitus. A survey of osteopaths was undertaken by means of a self-completion questionnaire. The following conclusions were reached: 1. Nine out of ten osteopaths come into contact with diabetic patients in the course of their osteopathic practice. 2. Two-thirds of osteopaths screen for diabetes, but only a quarter use clinical testing. Less than half of the osteopaths in the study had identified possible undiagnosed cases in the previous year. 3. Variation exists regarding management of diabetic patients and support offered by different osteopaths. 4. Investigation into the efficacy of osteopathic intervention in the diagnosis and management of diabetic patients requires further research. 5. While only a minority of osteopaths follow orthodox medical guidelines, the majority would welcome osteopathic guidelines for diabetes mellitus. 6. Less than one-third of osteopaths provide ethnic relevant information to patients. Non-pharmacological methods of treatment and primary prevention such as nutritional, behavioural, social, and environmental manipulation are of primary importance in controlling dm2, therefore naturopathic osteopathy is a viable intervention.
