AimsThe aim of this study is to investigate the dietary practice of patients attending the clinic at the British College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM), in order to compare their diets to the government's recommended guidelines, and consequently identify any areas of weakness which can be addressed by practitioners in a clinical setting.
Method
A 24-hour recall, self-completion questionnaire was randomly distributed among new patients attending the BCOM Clinic. Questionnaires were analysed and data was converted into the appropriate format to create a snapshot picture of patients' dietary intake. This was then compared to government guidelines.
Results
The results demonstrate discrepancies in consumption of common food groups, consistent with government research. They also identify various other aspects of nutritional practice which may be addressed clinically or form the basis for further research.
Conclusion
When comparing the BCOM plate model created for this survey to the Food Standard Agency's plate model, a shortfall in consumption of various categories can be clearly seen, as well as over-consumption in other areas. These findings are comparable to current government research and may help identify areas of weakness in patients' dietary habits which can be addressed by the Osteopathic or Naturopathic practitioner. Several other areas related to nutritional practice have been investigated which, in isolation, do not have scientific significance but which may form the basis for potential further research and patient advice. - presented at
