Abstract
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is defined as 'all study and training that is undertaken after gaining a professional qualification, either to maintain or enhance existing skills and abilities'. As a concept it includes self-directed learning, personal evaluation and multi-disciplinary activities that are not necessarily in the form of traditional didactic lectures. The medical profession are altering their concept of post- graduate learning to incorporate the broader model of CPD, and it is also being instigated among the Osteopathic community, most likely in a mandatory format. This change has occurred primarily due to the establishment of the Osteopaths Act, making 'Osteopath' a protected title, and requiring the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) to establish a formalised structure of post- graduate learning for those deemed fit to call themselves Osteopaths. The primary aim of this study, with these changes in mind, is to study the general opinions that Osteopaths have on CPD, as the official consultation of the profession is undertaken. The hypothesis is that osteopaths within the UK approve of, and support, the implementation of mandatory CPD requirements. The study was performed with the use of two questionnaires sent out to random sample groups of Registered Osteopaths. The first questionnaire used the lickard scale to establish agreement or disagreement to specified statements relating to osteopathic CPD. The second used yes/no responses and provided space for the explanation of answers to more open-ended questions, again concerning osteopathic CPD.
Responses for the first questionnaire showed that osteopaths do support the introduction of mandatory CPD requirements and that many want a wide range of subject matter included in those requirements. Responses for the second questionnaire also showed majority support mandatory CPD requirements and provided further information on the reasoning behind the more negative opinions.
In conclusion the hypothesis was proven, UK osteopaths do support mandatory CPD requirements, although the implementation, and the recording of these requirements may lead to problems in the future. Further consultation will need to be carried out if the GOsC is to follow their plans through and utilize CPD requirements for the purpose of Revalidation. The medical profession is progressing to this and, as it was suggested prior to the first phase of consultation beginning, it seems likely that we as an osteopathic profession will follow, although perhaps a little less willingly.
