The aim of our study was to find out what are the most common expectations of patients when seeing an osteopath. It is important for the osteopath to know what the expectations are because conflicting treatment and expectations could produce an unsatisfied patient. With knowledge of the expectations, the osteopath can determine what the patient expects from the treatment and can act accordingly.
Qualitative methods were used in the study. We collected the material with a questionnaire which consisted of three open questions. The survey was conducted in private practices of five different osteopaths in Helsinki. We got 48 answers with one sheet returned empty.
First we did a review on prior studies on the subject. Based on the review we formed the three questions with which we collected the material. The material was analysed with qualitative contents analysis. The result is a summation of the expectations into three different groups or categories. After a careful examination of the data, we were able to form three major categories which are pain relief, expert help and holistic treatment. - presented at
